For families who read the Bible in English, a crossword can give children a small task to do together with an adult. I work on Bible for Soul, and our Bible crossword is one of the free games on the site.
I would use it alongside a chapter rather than make the whole evening a test. If a word is unfamiliar, there is time to look at the passage and discuss it. The English wording may be difficult for younger children, so an adult may need to help.
